OUR MISSION

The NYC Horse & Carriage Alliance strives to promote, protect and preserve the historic horse-drawn carriage industry in New York City by advocating for our horses’ welfare, ensuring public safety, and enhancing the experience of our customers and of all New Yorkers.

Our Goals & Achievements!

●​Promoting horse carriage rides in Central Park as the best way for visitors to view and experience this 

landmark, as the park designers intended. 

 

●​Marketing carriage rides as an integral part of the New York City experience. 

 

●​Educating the public about the legal rates and areas of operation for horse-drawn carriage services and 

how to avoid being scammed by unlicensed street vendors and competing tour operators in Central 

Park.. 

 

●​Developing best practices for equine welfare by carriage owners and operators, with adherence to 

these standards as an expectation of Association membership. 

 

●​Offering training for carriage owners and drivers on all aspects of running a horse carriage business, 

including horse care, city horse training and driving, carriage maintenance, acquiring permits, and 

participating in the tourism and hospitality industry. 

 

●​Informing the public about the standards of horse care required by law and by the Association. 

 

●​Providing assistance to members during veterinary emergencies for transporting horses to a clinic, 

using shared emergency funds, transportation services, or an Association-owned horse trailer. 

 

●​Offering support to members in finding retirement homes for their horses, by developing connections 

with existing nonprofit adoption programs or the creation of new retirement facilities. 

 

●​Lobbying for or against legislation affecting horse-drawn carriage operations in New York City or New 

York State. 

 

●​Supporting or opposing elected representatives engaged in political activity that affects horse carriage 

operations in New York City or New York State. 

 

●​Serving as a liaison between the Association members and city agencies, NYPD, the Central Park 

Conservancy, Community Boards or any other entities regulating or related to horse carriage 

operations. 

 

●​Working with and supporting other non-profit organizations whose missions align with the common 

business interest of the Association. Examples include, but are not limited to, the Central Park 

Conservancy, NYCgo, NYC & Company, New York State Horse Council, TWU Local 100, Carriage 

Operators of North America, NYC Electric Vehicle Safety Alliance, etc. 

 

●​Providing legal support through retained counsel for litigation or legal defense when the Association's 

business interests are threatened by the unlawful actions of competitors (such as pedicabs) or the city. 

 

●​Maintaining and beautifying the areas where the horses live and work. 

 

●​Ensuring the continued operation of stables in Manhattan where members board their horses. 

 

●​Engaging with the wider community through charitable donations of carriage services and equine 

programs, providing opportunities for people of all walks of life to connect with horses and history. 

 

●​Advocating for the continued operation of horse carriages globally, ensuring the sustainability of the 

industry world-wide.
